local layers

My experience with felting thus far has been limited to creating over-sized pelt-like sheets for Jake's work. Sure, that takes technique but not a whole lot of refinement.

So I was thrilled to visit Annika Grandelius's wool and felting studio, Ullverkstan Vallstena, on our handicraft tour of Gotland. She graciously gave us a hands-on tutorial while elaborating on the local and international traditional techniques that have informed her practice. I walked away with a souvenir of my efforts- a felt poppy made from Gotlandish wool- and inspired by a new sense of the delicacy and detail possible in felting.

Note: For more information on our day-of-craft, check out Jake's blog post.
